A case study for usage of PubMed
PubMed can be searched by entering any of the following search terms:
- Topics
- Authors
- Journals
For example, type “dUTPase” in the query box on the PubMed page given at:
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/sites/entrez?db=PubMed
Select PubMed in the scroll down menu given. Click Go.
A page showing the results would open. Check item 1, 2 81 and 82. Select Abstracts in the Display scroll down menu. This will show a page having abstracts to all the four result options.
If you know the author name and the name of the protein, for example Abergel is the author for dUTPase, then type “Abergel dUTPase” in the query box and click GO. A page showing all the articles by Abergel on dUTPase will open. This icon shows that free text is available for that particular article.
Select MEDLINE in the scroll down menu of Display (as indicated by the blue arrow in the diagram below). MEDLINE is a journal maintained by NLM. This would open a page showing a lot of information about the article. In this the abbreviations are:
- PMID for PubMed ID
- TI for Title
- AB for abstract
- AD for the address of where the article is generated from etc
The abstracts can directly be searched by typing, for example, dUTPase [AB] in the query box on the PubMed main page.
Limits can, however, also be applied. For example, type Carcinogens in the query box and click limits. This is to make the search more specific. For example:
In the dates box select 10 year in the scroll down menu for Published in last. In the Humans or Animals box, check Humans. In Languages box, check English. In Subsets box, check History of Medicine, however, a disadvantage of this would be that you will not be able to find any information before 1965 as all the information that PubMed has is after 1965. In the Type of Article box, check Review. In Default tags scroll down meanu, select Title/Abstract. Click Go. This would show all results matching to our limits. However, we have to make sure that our limits are optimum otherwise no results would match our limits
